After I had been teaching languages for over 20 years, I decided to follow a course that would allow me to work with learners who have special educational needs. Thereafter I started my own remedial clinic in 1999. The reason for this venture was mainly the fact that, during my years of teaching, I so often came across learners who could not read or write according to their level of intelligence. Moreover, this often led to academic failure, rebelliousness and feelings of worthlessness.

I thought that I would be able to help such learners with this additional qualification. But to my utmost frustration I found that most of the techniques I used, such as phonics instruction, did not really have any impact on many of these children.

I decided I had to further my knowledge of psychology to try and find solutions to this problem. I finally completed a master’s degree on children with a reading disorder as well as the psychological effects it had on them. The reading programme of Ron Davis I tested is based on Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and multi-sensory methods, and my study produced extremely significant results. I further also qualified in hypnotherapy and studied Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) as well as the Sedona Method.

I treated clients with reading, spelling, concentration and study problems. My reading programme included various techniques. I taught my clients how to obtain control over their reading orientation, added reading exercises to it, Dr Linda Silverman’s spelling techniques, relaxation and concentration exercises, eye and Brain Gym exercises, as well as EFT, showing very good results. I also offered a programme in study methods to individuals who do not necessarily have learning problems, but are not able to structure their work, do research for assignments and learn for tests or examinations.

The therapy I gave offered everyone hope and a better tomorrow.
